Broken Gir

Gir --> 10.5

Had a bit of misfortune with Gir last night, but it appears to have turned into an opportunity to get some work done on him that I'd been putting off for far too long.

I ran a backup last night, then booted off of the backup and did a format & copy from the backup to his internal hard drive. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as a standard procedure, but it is effectively the ultimate "defrag". In addition to making the file structure more orderly it also freed up about 240 MB of space (according to Finder). :-)

At this moment I'm posting this entry from Tak, as I'm finally getting around to upgrading him to Leopard. I'm a wee bit concerned about having enough space to actually run programs afterward, as I had to ditch some printer drivers in order to have enough space to even do the install. If it works out, cool. If not, well, I can restore from the backup until I can get a larger hard drive.

As far as his hardware state goes, one of the internal fans was making a horrible grinding noise for a couple of minutes after the mishap and it scared the hell out of me, but it quickly subsided (the sound, not the fear). Now one of the fans sounds just a bit off when he's held at certain angles (like something is pressing ever so slightly into the fan), but it's very subtle and so far there doesn't appear to be any effect on system operation. I have a Dashboard widget called iStat Nano installed that gives a full breakdown on the internal temperature (CPU, GPU, hard drive, etc.), and everything seems normal. I'll keep an eye on it but I'm much less concerned now than I was last night.

Ooh! The upgrade is done and he's rebooting! Gonna go play with the new OS! :-)
