Larry Edwin Ferrell, 1945-2006

Kim has already made a post about this here, but I feel the need to post here as well to say that her dad died on Saturday morning.

I'm at a loss to think of anything fitting, comforting, or profound to say. It sucks. It just flat-out sucks. The world has been deprived of a good friend, husband, father, brother, and son.

*gloom*

Please keep Larry, Kim, and especially Pat (his wife) in your thoughts and prayers.

Justice

The contrast between this post and my last one is unintentional.

Tonight at 6 pm Danny Harold Rolling is going to die. Call me a cold motherfucker if you will, but this fact is the high point of my day.

In the fall of 1990, Rolling murdered 5 University of Florida students- Sonja Larson, Christina Powell, Christy Hoyt, Tracy Paules, and Manny Taboada. He also turned Gainesville into a media circus for the entire semester, and poisoned the open culture at UF with a layer of suspicion that persisted at least until we left Gainesville in 1994. From what I've heard, during the weeks that followed the murders Gainesville was the most heavily armed population per capita in the US. Based on my own experience living in G'ville at the time I believe it.

It would be an understatement to say that the murders were brutal in the extreme. I didn't know any of the victims personally, and I'm not one to dwell on the past, but I will say this- screw you, Danny Rolling. I hope that your death brings some measure of peace to their families and loved ones, or at least a sense of vindication.
