Gir on the floor

You ought to be in pictures!

...or at least in a comic strip!:

Eric & Gir in PC Weenies

Yes, that's actually me (and Gir)! I won a "walk-on role" on PC Weenies from a contest on the MyMac.com podcast a couple of weeks back. I sent a few pix to Krishna Sadasivam, the artist who does the web comic, and also told him about the little surprise "Welcome Home!" party that the Smoosh threw for Gir when he returned the first time I sent him off to be repaired. I think it also fits his recent upgrade rather nicely. :-)

*EDIT* Fixed the link. It now includes a little blurb underneath.

Internet Meme Alert: "Snakes on a Plane"

I don't claim to get what it's all about, but "Snakes on a Plane" has pinged my radar twice now, so I figured I'd just mention it here.

The last time I got this kind of vibe from an oddball meme like this it was "All Your Base", so there 'ya go.

Running with the Big Dog

On today's episode of "Robots! Robots! Robots!" we present to you Big Dog, the robot that runs!

This thing is impressive. It's got 4 legs, and can navigate through uneven terrain, mud, snow, and loose rocks. Furthermore, it can handle inclines fairly easily, is able to side-step, and even recovers easily when kicked to the side. Whatever algorithms they're using to dictate its movement seem to have nailed the task. Its movement style is uncannily natural-looking.

I don't know how well it would fit into the role for which it was designed (carrying cargo over land for the military) since in its current incarnation it's rather loud and probably not so durable, but as robot locomotion goes I think that this is a significant breakthrough.

If you want to go straight to the video, you'll find it here.

Now they just need to load some guns on it, along with motion trackers and some collision avoidance, pattern matching, and target tracking capabilities, and you've got a basic robot of doom to unleash upon the unsuspecting populace! ;-)
