Critters

It's about TIME!

It's almost 3 am, I just got home for work (aside from a 2 hour dinner break), and I'm exhausted, but I have to post.

Today was the culmination of 11 years of investigation, consideration, self-education, and planning (along with a more-than-healthy dose of procrastination!). Today I have fulfilled one of my life goals.

As of today, I am Alcor member #A-2072.

My bracelet & necklace arrived today, along with copies of all of the paperwork. I'm official! I've cut off the black rubber bracelets I've been wearing the last few months and replaced them with something decidedly more life-affirming (and permanent!).

There are currently 660 active Alcor members (I guess I'm 661), plus 64 in cryosuspension. Most members aren't particularly vocal about it, and Alcor isn't permitted to release their identities until after they've been suspended, if at all. I've decided not to take that route. Much like polyamory or any other "fringe" group, you don't gain acceptance by remaining silent.

I suspect that at least some here will lump me into the Tin Foil Hat Brigade for not only believing such a kooky premise but for actually paying money for it. That's a reasonable initial reaction, but I invite you to look into the science behind cryopreservation, cellular biology, and the potential of medical nanotechnology before passing final judgment. I'll be happy to discuss it at length.

In other news, SpaceShip One today became the first privately-funded spacecraft to breach the internationally-accepted boundary of space, ushering in the era of civilian space flight. It's a modest beginning, and there's a loooong way to go before you and I can hop on a rocket and fly to Shimizu's orbital hotel, but it's a significant milestone nonetheless. Cheers to all, and I hope that the X-Prize is claimed before the year is out!

Between all that and the really good sex femetal and I had after dinner (yay!), I count today as a big win, even if I did have to work an absurdly long day.

Oh, and in 2 days the Smoosh leaves for Cedar Point, and the tallest roller coaster on the planet! I'll post on that later. :-)
