A Ninja Looks At 40

I'd originally intended to write this a year ago, but what could I really say about being 40 if I'd only just turned? (Oh, and I was too lazy/distracted to get around to it.)

So now I'm at the tail end of my 40th year, and glad I waited before commenting. Physically, the time around my 40th birthday wasn't go great. I was sick with a cough that just wouldn't go away, I'd developed a UTI, and a couple days after my birthday I had a vasectomy (I'll make that another post). In short, I felt like crap.

It's been almost all improvement from there.

Physically, everything that was an issue at the end of last year has been resolved, and I've even started exercising again (albeit intermittently). I've neither gained nor lost weight this year, which while less than ideal is certainly acceptable!

The single most significant event in my life this year was that I got back together with redheadlass. This was, on so many levels, the universe becoming "right" again. It has brought me nothing but joy. Well, joy and a lot of really good meals! :-)

The high points of the year included the usual awesomeness of Frolicon, Dragon*Con, and Necronomicon. Frolicon included the most amazing public takedown/sex scene with joreth and tacit. Dragon*Con found me on two panels (Cryonics and Transhumanism) and gave me the opportunity to spend much of the weekend being social with Aubrey de Grey, a personal hero of mine. And Necro involved some unexpected naughtiness, as well as getting to geek out with all things Terminator with Timothy Zahn. Pretty damn stellar cons this year!

My 40th year also included joreth and my first anniversary, which was a fantastic weekend culminating in us being flung 400 feet into the air! joreth, femetal, and I also got to take a trip to the Bahamas last month!

Most recently, femetal got me an early Christmas/birthday gift - a major upgrade for Gir! Instead of a 12" PowerBook G4, he now resides in a 15" MacBook Pro (2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB HD). Moving to a larger machine was a tradeoff, as I love the 12" form factor, but the enormous performance increase makes it well worthwhile!

There are always some losses of course, and this year had a couple of big ones. redheadlass lost her stepfather Gerald. Closer to home but much less importantly, our cat APAR died early in the year. Both losses are still keenly felt.

When all is said and done though, I spent my last birthday deliriously happy, surrounded by my closest loves. I'm spending this birthday deliriously happy, surrounded by my closest loves.

That sounds like a great year to me.

Addendum: Also, this year I ate haggis. 'Nuf said.
