What is a Conspiracy Theory?

The audio portion of this video is by Perry DeAngelis, founder of the New England Skeptical Society and skeptical rogue. I was recently asked by an idiot on YouTube about my definition of conspiracy theorists, and realized that a segment of Perry's talk on the psychology of belief answers the question far better than I could ever hope to do in a 500 character comment. And so, in answer to that question, and in honor of the 1 year anniversary of Perry's passing, I created this video.

That's just awesome! Just 2 hours ago, on my way home, I listened to the Skeptics Guide To The Universe episode where Dr. Novella addresses Conspiracy Theories. Much of what he had to say was also said here in this video, verbatem in some parts, so I'm thrilled to see/hear it in a form easily passed along.

Thanks! And love the images you chose!

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! I don't know how far back you've listened to the SGU (they'll be having a live recording at Dragon*Con, BTW), but Perry was one of the "rogues". After he died they did a couple of memorial episodes that included a lot of him on the show and elsewhere. I pulled the audio from episode #109.

Actually, I started at the beginning, so I've only listened to the first 13 episodes so far, so I recognized his name and voice. I didn't know he died until I read this entry. I have the live recording scheduled for one of the panels I want to attend.
