Jury Duty 2 - Judgment Day!

I was summoned for jury duty again! I report on Monday morning assuming I'm not excused the night before like I was last time.

I wonder how my chances of serving would be affected if I introduced myself as a vaguely anti-authoritarian, polyamorous, atheist libertarian who doesn't support recreational drug laws, blue laws, the current administration, or government definitions of marriage?

When did you last serve? Can't you not be called any more often than every 2 years or something?

I've never actually served. I was summoned last year, but found out the night before that I didn't need to show up. Half of me wants to do it, 'cuz it's bound to be more interesting than being at work, but the rest of me doesn't want to leave work in anyone else's hands.

You have a better chance of getting excused if you tell them you can't wait to be on a jury because you can spot guilty people in a heartbeat! ;)

I've thought about that, but I'm not going to deliberately poison my chances of serving. I'm sufficiently civic-minded to not be willing to shirk my duty as a citizen. I just reserve the right to complain about it. ;-)

Voir dire doesn't work like that, I'm afraid. They ask questions that are relevant to the type of jurors they want at trial, and unless a party's/the defendant's politicas or alternative lifestyle is an issue in the case, all that stuff won't even come up.

Your best bet is to be honest. They'll voir dire five people for every one they select. Your odds of being eliminated are actually pretty good.

I know it doesn't work that way, but it's fun to kid around about.

Besides, I could try to find a way to make mention of it, though I won't. All kidding aside, I take it seriously, and if I end up serving will do so to the best of my ability.
