My birthday came a little early! Wii!!

Wii!!!!!!!! :-) Oh so happy is I! (My Smoosh loves me!)

'Course, this means that any chance of me getting caught up on everyone's lives this year has just about dropped to zero, but I hope you all understand. Just please stop having major emergencies, surgery, and car accidents until after New Year's, okay?

I've only been playing with it for an hour and a half or so, but this thing really is as nifty as they say. The remote works pretty darned well. It's kinda so-so in the boxing game, but tennis and bowling work great. I just added it to our MAC address filter and gave it the wireless security settings and it hopped right onto the network and started pulling down a firmware update. This is either very cool or it's a prelude to the NS-5's from I, Robot. 'Course, from my perspective that's win-win. ;-)

Glancing through the documentation and menus it looks like it can function as a portal for news and weather. Sure, Gir can give me that with a single keystroke, but still, how nifty is that?

This is the first Nintendo console I've ever owned (GameBoy and GBA notwithstanding), and all in all this seems very intelligently designed. Clearly a lot of thought went into it. In a lot of ways the friendly interface and overall "gee-I-can't-believe-they-thought-of-that" factor remind me very much of the Dreamcast. From me that's high praise indeed.

Ooh! Update's done! Gotta go!

Just be careful of motion related injuries, and broken straps if you don't have the new one.

Definitely good advice. I try to make a point of not flinging my electronics.

Mine has the original wrist strap design. Nintendo is replacing them for free, and I've already sent off for the tougher version. I should have it by the end of the first week in January.

Mmmmmm... Wii... ;-)

I'd seen that before, but thanks for the link! As a metaphor for design criteria that's actually not too far off. The Wii can't compare with the PS3 at all as far as raw horsepower, but Sony seems to have overlooked that the whole point of a game console is to be fun. Plus, the Wii has an oh-so-tasty interface...

I'm sure that there's a way to equate the Wii smacking herself in the ass with some aspect of the actual game system's capabilities, but instead of pondering it I think I'll just go watch the video again and hope that it represents some forthcoming 3rd party peripheral. ;-)

if they come out with a periphreal like THAT I'll break down & buy a console.

The kids have all Nintendo game systems....they will not be getting the newest one in the near future...but they can play all of their older game boy games on the DS or the gamecube...it has been much cheaper than having to rebuy new games for them to play on each system...
