Sea-Monkey Storm!

Methuselah would be proud. It seems that the colony on my windowsill was very busy over the weekend, and there's been a population explosion. I'd estimate the current population at 8-12 individuals. It's hard to be precise 'cuz many of them are really tiny. :-)

This makes me a little happier than it probably ought to. Well, that and today is my last day at work before Dragon*Con!!!

Speaking of which, I bleached my hair for the 2nd time last night. It's now very very light blonde, and stands up rather nicely all on its own. I think it actually looks pretty darned good, though it's not yet *white*. I'll hit it once more tomorrow and maybe a fourth time (though probably not) after that.

When do we get to see pictures? As for white, I thought you need to add a white-blue dye after bleaching to get it really really white? Don't forget conditioner so your hair doesn't feel halfway between Barbie's and straw. Leave-in shine/conditioner products do well for me.

there is a halfway point between the two...mine always just goes to straw...

Not that I dye my hair...:)

More often than not I'm the one behind the camera, so there are usually only a few pix that I'm in. I'll try to get a few choice ones posted to LJ after 'con.

I don't dye my hair at all, and it took quite a while for me to figure out how to actually get it pure white. I've tried using some stuff called Ultra White Minx, but it didn't seem to help much. I found that adding Red-Gold Corrector to the bleach helps somewhat (I still use it), but there was always just a hint of color left in my hair.

In the end what I found works best is a bit more... radical. I bleach the hell out of it! :-)

Here's the specific process I follow: I use Wella's powder bleach with 40 volume developer (they make a 50 volume, but you need a license to buy it). I rub it in really well and leave it in for a full hour. (The instructions say that it should never be used directly on the scalp. I blatantly disregard that.) Then I rinse it out in the shower, shampoo, rinse, and then use Regenal pH normalizer (I might have the spelling wrong) for 2 minutes, rinse that out, and follow it up with Pantene Intensive Care conditioner (the "undo 3 months of damage" stuff) for 3 minutes.

That's the whole process. I do it at least three times, and sometimes four. Whenever possible I skip a day between each treatment. The end result is that my hair is completely shock-white... and burned to a crisp. This actually works out very well. It means that my hair stays exactly where I put it once it dries (I spike it) without needing any kind of gel or spray. Yes, it ends up brittle and some of it will eventually break, but I keep my hair so short that it grows out before it becomes a problem.

BTW, your userpic makes me crave Chinese food. ;-)
