Red Pill or Blue Pill?

OK, I need a bit of advice.

The Matrix Online starts today. A coworker of mine got a pre-order copy over the weekend but has decided that he doesn't have time to commit to it. He's planning on returning it back today unless he can find someone to take it off his hands.

I've been anxiously awaiting this game for over a year and a half. I'm a total whore for anything Matrix-related, and the idea of actually contributing to the continuation of the story line is really compelling. The fact that the Wachowski brothers are directly involved makes it all the more so.

The problem, in a word, is time. Life is often absurdly busy, and MMORPGs tend to be time-consumers. I could easily see myself getting hooked on this!

There are a couple of mitigating factors. First, it's PC-only, which means that I won't have a machine that can run it by my side 24/7, and can only play it on Ghidrah at home. The second is that zensidhe and redheadlass are already involved with WoW. (Mike plays a fair amount now- Janet almost certainly will once her new machine arrives.) This is both a good thing and a bad thing. On the one hand, it means that 3/4 of the Smoosh would be involved in some MMORPG or another, and if Kim got hooked into one or the other (most likely WoW) then we could schedule group game time, which could be nice. On the other hand, it would most likely end up being me playing The Matrix, and the rest of the Smoosh playing WoW, which kinda blows.

About half of the people on my friends list play WoW and at least one has beta tested MxO, so my question is this: is anyone else out there planning on doing The Matrix?

Red or blue?

First off.. I am an MMORPG junkie, and tend to be enthralled whenever a new game comes out. I tried the Matrix, and honestly it didn't grab me and it wasn't very interesting. Even visually it wasn't very interesting. I was very disappointed. Usually I have to fight myself from becoming obsessed with a new MMORPG and the Matrix was just kinda, eh. I think they've done something wrong on a fundamental level. I couldn't tell you what exactly, it's just missing the *magic*. I recommend you play WoW instead, and I say that as someone who kind of hates fantasy RPG and would much rather play cyberpunk. The Matrix might get better over time, but I think it needs to mature and they need to figure out how to make it more immersive.

Neither fangly or I plan on playing the Matrix.

The obvious reason is that all of our computers are now Macs (I got fangly a G5 iMac for our anniversary). Even though Blizzard/Vivendi have their problems I would still support their game on principal as it came with a Mac version on release. I don't know of any other game company who does that. How many years did it take for the Mac version of the original EQ client to come out?

Regardless of platform though I'd stick with WoW. While I like the Matrix universe it's never called to me enough to make me want to immerse myself in it. If they came up with something based on Cyberpunk I might be willing to go there.

We love WoW. Having never played an MMORPG before I have found it very intuitive and easy to learn. I like the interface, the graphics, and the history/storyline.

...and despite what cyber_wolf_2020 thinks of our guild, they're a great bunch of people and have helped us out of lot. We've made a bunch of new friends there. ;)
