Not to put too fine a point on it...

"My administration will value science. We will make decisions based on facts."
-President-Elect Barak Obama (just a minute ago)

THE MACHINE BE PRAISED!! It's telling that I'm so excited to hear such a basic sentiment come out of the White House, but this makes my day.

I'm absolutely ecstatic to hear these words come out of a president's mouth, and absolutely disheartened to realize just why this statement is so exciting.

Maybe, if he doesn't somehow screw up royally, he will set the precedent for a facts- and evidence-based administration for future terms.

I long for the day when a statement like this produces a blase reaction because it's now expected, but I revel in being able to see the day when it has been said at all.

Not to make too fine a point of it, but that statement, as great as it is, didn't come from a President or the White House. He isn't President yet.

I know you all understand that, but I've been having to remind others since the election! In fact, I've already seen "Impeach Obama" graffiti. :-P

In any case, I take the statement as a positive sign...but I'll wait for him to start actually doing something to back it up before I heave my sigh of relief.

He isn't President yet.

Um... yeah. That's why I quoted him as "President-Elect". :-P

It's true that I may be premature in my relief, but his statements regarding science have been almost unilaterally supportive*, and his choice of a Nobel-winning physicist as Energy Secretary all point to a much higher overall regard for science than the current administration.

* As h_postmortemus correctly pointed out, his statements regarding NASA have been inconsistent at best.

Too bad he's probably going to slash NASA's budget and kick Ares and Orion to the curb.

Heh... just realized why that seemed funny to write that sentence. :)

Sadly, you're probably correct. Time will tell on that matter.

At the very least, this is a positive sign with regard to stem cell research and "faith based" sex ed programs.

There is a reason I voted for this guy!

NASA might be toast I'm not sure how I feel about it as I work in science and NASA doesn't do a lot to put lasers on my sharks or liquid helium in my dewer but damn I grew up loving NASA. Now onto the meat of my hell yeah.

Has anyone else noticed who is going to be the secretary of energy under Obama? Stephen have you seen my nobel prize Chu an experimental condensed matter physicist. Officially I feel well pandered to by the incoming administration.

Yup. I got the quote while watching him announce Dr. Chu's appointment. :-) :-) :-)
